Hannah Gold «Parece que nuestra felicidad depende de nuestra última compra»
Estuvimos hablando con Hannah Gold, recientemente galardonada con el premio Waterstones Children´s Book Prize 2002 por su maravillosa novela «El último oso».
Esta novela cuenta la historia de April, la hija de un investigador del Ártico, y su encuentro casual con un oso polar solitario, un libro para inspirador con un maravilloso mensaje «nadie es demasiado pequeño o insignificante para marcar la diferencia en las cosas que realmente les importan».
Aquí les dejamos la entrevista de esta bestseller mundial, si «El último oso» es una esperanza para el ser humano y el planeta, no te pierdas su entrevista.
«El último oso» es sin duda, una historia conmovedora y en defensa del planeta. La naturaleza y los animales no producen basura como lo hace el ser humano. ¿Tenemos un problema en nuestra forma de consumir?
Sí, gran parte de la sociedad occidental está impulsada por el consumo y a menudo parece que nuestra felicidad depende de nuestra última compra. Estos sentimientos, por supuesto, son fugaces. Y pasamos a comprar el siguiente juguete nuevo, y así sucesivamente. Es un ciclo interminable que, lamentablemente, crea una cultura de usar y tirar. ¿Y dónde acaba esta basura? En el océano o literalmente enterrada en la tierra. En algún momento tendremos que dejar de comprar tantas cosas, pero para ello es necesario un cambio social tan profundo que parece difícil creer que vaya a producirse o que vaya a producirse.
EN: «The Last Bear» is undoubtedly a moving story in defence of the planet. Nature and animals do not produce rubbish like humans do. Do we have a problem with the way we consume?
Yes, much of Western society is consumer driven and it often feels like our happiness derives from our latest purchase. These feelings, are of course, fleeting. And we go on to buy the next new toy and so on and so on. It’s an endless cycle which sadly creates a throwaway culture. And where does this rubbish end up? Either in the ocean or literally buried into the earth. At some point, we need to stop buying so much stuff but it requires such a deep societal shift, it seems hard to believe if or when it will ever happen.
Más allá de entretener ¿Cuál es la intención de este libro?
Es importante que diga aquí que, aunque hay un mensaje sobre el cambio climático en El último oso, el libro es principalmente un entretenimiento. Los niños son muy astutos. Si un libro tiene una agenda demasiado amplia, entonces ningún mensaje, por muy poderoso que sea, penetrará. Y para mí, la intención ni siquiera era escribir un libro sobre el cambio climático. Empecé desde una posición de amor, con el deseo de escribir un libro sobre la amistad entre un niño y un animal, ya que estos son algunos de mis libros favoritos. Sólo cuando empecé a investigar dónde ambientar el libro me di cuenta de que no podía escribir sobre los osos polares sin tocar su pérdida de hábitat. Pero si hubiera un mensaje claro para llevar a casa del libro sería algo muy simple como que nadie es demasiado pequeño para marcar la diferencia.
EN: Beyond entertaining, what is the intention of this book?
It’s important for me to say here that although there is a climate change message in The Last Bear, the book is primarily for entertainment. Children are very astute. If a book has too much of an agenda, then no message, no matter how powerful, will ever penetrate through. And for me, the intention wasn’t even to write a book about climate change! I started out from a position of love – with a desire to write a book about the friendship between a child and an animal, as these are some of my favourite books. It was only when I started researching where to set the book that I realised I couldn’t write about polar bears without touching upon their loss of habitat. But if there was one clear take-home message from the book it would be something very simple like, no-one is too small to make a difference.
Tu mensaje es esperanzador pero con los datos que tenemos ¿no crees que realmente estamos llegando al “último oso”?
Me resulta especialmente difícil leer informes científicos sobre el cambio climático o ver documentales sobre la destrucción de nuestro planeta, porque, como muchos niños, soy muy sensible a lo que le ocurre a nuestro planeta. Y sí, es cierto que estamos llegando a un punto de no retorno y que en algunos lugares ya es demasiado tarde. Pero espero que libros como el mío abran una conversación sobre cómo crear un futuro más esperanzador y sostenible. Y lo que es más importante, que sea cual sea el futuro, siempre habrá faros de luz en nuestro mundo y oportunidades para crear un mundo más amable.
EN: Your message is hopeful, but with the data we have, don’t you think we are really reaching the «last bears»?
I find it particularly difficult to read scientific reports on climate change or to watch documentaries on the destruction of our planet, because like many children, I am very sensitive to what is happening to our planet. And yes – it is true, that we are reaching a point of no return and that in some places, it is already too late. But I hope books like mine open up a conversation about how to create a more hopeful and sustainable future. More importantly, that whatever lies ahead, there are always going to be beacons of light in our world and opportunities to create a kinder world.
Tu personaje principal, una niña inquieta y valiente, amante de la naturaleza ¿crees que actualmente los niños están concienciados con el cuidado del medioambiente?
Creo que basta con ver el gran número de jóvenes activistas por el clima en todo el mundo para saber hasta qué punto los niños se apasionan por este tema. Los niños sienten las cosas muy profundamente, muy auténticamente. Ven que el planeta está en problemas, ven que somos la causa principal de esto, y realmente no pueden entender por qué no estamos haciendo más para ayudar. El reto consiste en tomar esta pasión y dividirla en pasos más pequeños y factibles para que todos los niños sientan que están marcando la diferencia, ya sea plantando flores silvestres en su patio trasero, construyendo una casa de insectos, contando pájaros o mariposas, recogiendo basura o simplemente pasando más tiempo en la naturaleza. Al fin y al cabo, cuanto más amas algo, más inclinado estás a querer protegerlo.
EN: Your main character, a restless and brave girl, a nature lover, do you think that nowadays children are aware of how to take care of the environment?
I think you only need to look at the sheer number of youth climate activists all over the world to know just how much children passionately care about this subject. Children feel things very deeply, very authentically. They see the planet in trouble, they see we are the primary cause of this, and they genuinely cannot understand why we aren’t doing more to help. The challenge is to take this passion and then break it down into smaller actionable steps so every child can feel they are making a difference – be it planting wild flowers in their backyard, building a bug house, counting birds or butterflies, picking up litter or even just spending more time in nature. After all, the more you love something, then the more inclined you are to want to protect it.
En tu libro los personajes se van a vivir a una isla ¿Es el miedo del ser humano el motor que está provocando un cambio de conciencia o es producto de una evolución?
Esa es una gran pregunta. Me imagino que es una combinación de ambas cosas. Hay mucho miedo en este momento y el miedo siempre impulsa la acción. Y al mismo tiempo, hay mucho deseo de volver a lo básico, a una forma de vida más sencilla y menos agitada. Muchos soñamos con una vida en la que estemos más en contacto con la naturaleza y sus propiedades curativas. Tal vez esta sea la evolución: un anhelo de volver a un lugar del que una vez salimos.
EN: In your book, the characters go to live on an island. Is human fear the driving force that is provoking a change of consciousness or is it the product of an evolution?
That’s such a great question. I would imagine it’s a combination of both. There is a lot of fear about at the moment and fear always drives action. And at the same time, there is a lot of desire to return to basics – to a simpler, less hectic way of life. Many of us dream of a life where we are more in touch with nature and its healing properties. Perhaps this is the evolution – a yearning to return to a place where we once came from.

Siempre he sido una gran amante de los animales. Hay algo tan puro y honesto en su forma de amar incondicionalmente. Si miras a los ojos de un animal, ves un reflejo de ti mismo. Y eso es lo que quería captar en El último oso: la sensación de que este oso polar no es sólo un animal fuera de la vista. Es una criatura viva, que siente el dolor y el amor como nosotros. Y ese amor se refleja en April. Una niña de 11 años que representa a todos los niños que se preocupan apasionadamente por los animales y que se dejan llevar por sus emociones para marcar la diferencia.
EN: Brigitte Bardot told me that God was found in the eyes of an animal. What do you find in the eyes of a bear? And in the eyes of a girl?
I have always been a huge animal lover. There is just something so pure and honest about the way they love so unconditionally. If you look into any animal’s eyes, you see a reflection of yourself at your truest self. And that’s what I wanted to capture in The Last Bear – the sense that this polar bear is not just some animal out of sight. He’s a living, feeling creature who feels pain and love just like we do. And that love is mirrored in April. An 11-year-old girl who represents all children who care passionately about animals and who are led by their emotions to make a difference.
¿Nos dejas Un llamamiento para aquellos que aún siguen tirando basura en el campo o en el mar?
Cada uno de los seres humanos de esta tierra no es sólo un custodio del planeta, sino que forma parte de él. Cuanto más abusamos de él, más lo ensuciamos, más acabamos ensuciando nuestra propia alma.
EN: Can you leave us an appeal to those who still litter in the countryside or in the sea?
Every single human on this earth is not just a custodian of the planet, they are part of the planet. The more we abuse it, the more we litter it, then the more we just end up littering our own soul.
